New Child Protection Standards
Keeping it Safe - New Child Protection Standards Launched - Clare Fielden of the Partnership at Work Project writes on the launch of new essential child protection guidelines. The National Council for Voluntary Youth Services has now launched its standards and guidelines on child protection. The document is called “Keeping it Safe”, and is aimed at voluntary organisations which work with young people. Eventually, it is intended that the standards will link in with an accreditation scheme which will enable organisations to receive a “kite mark” to say that they have achieved best practice. Until then, the document provides a useful framework for any organisation seeking to develop their practice. The document considers child protection in its widest sense, covering the following areas: • Organisational policies and procedures • Reporting concerns, suspicions and allegations • Safe recruitment and selection • Managing paid staff and volunteers • Providing education and support • Providing safe activities There are a number of standards in each area, which are then backed up by guidelines providing in-depth guidance on each standard. In addition, there are appendices which include some model forms and information on relevant legislation. There is also a workbook, which can be used as a practical tool to enable organisations to record and collate evidence of policies and procedures. The document is intended to be both comprehensive and accessible, and can be used by organisations of any size, including those run completely by volunteers. It would also be of use to those employed by local authorities who may wish to encourage best practice in the voluntary organisations that they work with. “Keeping it Safe” is available from the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services, 2 Plough Yard, Shoreditch High Street, London EC2A 3LP, tel: 020 7422 8630, or email: mail@ncvys.org.uk. It costs £30, with a 25% discount for NCVYS members. If you would like help in putting any area of “Keeping it Safe” into practice, please contact Partnership at Work. The helpline is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 4pm on 0870 770 7907, or Clare can be contacted directly on 0121 244 8757
